7 Common Causes of Split Ends

Hair / July 17, 2017 / No Comment

If you’re like a lot of women, you dread split ends and you want to know how you can prevent them. The good news is usually most of the causes of split ends are preventable. Below are some of the most common causes of split ends.

#1: Straightening, Curling or Perming

When you are using an appliance on your hair to straighten, perm or curl your hair, this can cause split ends. It sucks your hair’s natural moisture from the follicles and your hair is brittle and dry so you get split ends.

#2: Rebonding

This is another process that many women do. You expose your hair to a chemical solution for more than three hours. When you do this it can damage your hair and lead to split ends.

#3: Blow drying

If you are constantly using a hair dryer on your hair, this could be the reason why you have split ends. The air that is coming from your blow dryer is hot and is removes the moisture from your hair like the other appliances do and this leads to split ends.

#4: Hair coloring/highlights

Any kind of chemicals are going to wreak havoc on your hair’s natural chemical makeup. Coloring your hair a lot and using products of poor quality can lead to split ends.

#5: Shampoo

You should make sure you’re using the right type of shampoo and that you’re not washing your hair too much. Don’t change your shampoo often and use a type of shampoo that is made for your type of hair. When you use the wrong kind of shampoo or you are using a lot of it, it can lead to split ends.

#6: Combing or brushing too hard

When you are combing or brushing your hair, make sure that you are being gentle and don’t do it when it’s wet. Vigorously combing and brushing your hair can damage your hair and split the ends of it.

#7: Genetics

Sometimes split ends aren’t because of something that you have done – it’s simply because of genetics. It’s known as Trichorrhexis nodosa and it can lead to your hair shafts being defective. This means that your hair’s thick in some spots and thin in others. This means that you’re going to have split ends.

These are the things that can lead to having split ends. Most of them are preventable. Just take care of your hair and treat it gently. The result will be strong, healthy hair.
